The Bad News, The Good News and the Even Better News

The Bad News

The “nolfgirl.com Old School” NOLF 1 Deathmatch Server (IP: 195.149.21.38) goes offline forever on 6th February 2009 as the company that hosts the server has been bought out and the new owners have decided to move away from the game hosting business altogether.

The Good News

A new, faster server is online (IP: 81.19.209.201) with a new host. The server currently called “nolfgirl.com Test“ and has a password (which is “password”) – feel free to test. When the old server goes offline on Friday, the password will be removed and the server renamed to “nolfgirl.com Old School”.

The Even Better News

The idiots that have been causing problems on my server for so long are now going to get banned, starting from Friday.

RPC Exploit in Windows 2000/2003/XP/Vista/2008
Posted By Dan at Fri 24 Oct 2008, 6:09 PM in Nolfgirl.com News || 3 Comments

Microsoft released an emergency patch today to close a hole in Windows which could be exploited by a worm to spread from computer to computer automatically, with no user intervention. This is the first time in 18 months Microsoft have released an "emergency patch" and are recommending that Windows users install the patch immediately.

Executive Summary

This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in the Server service. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if an affected system received a specially crafted RPC request. On Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems, an attacker could exploit this vulnerability without authentication to run arbitrary code. It is possible that this vulnerability could be used in the crafting of a wormable exploit. Firewall best practices and standard default firewall configurations can help protect network resources from attacks that originate outside the enterprise perimeter.
This security update is rated Critical for all supported editions of Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and rated Important for all supported editions of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.
The security update addresses the vulnerability by correcting the way that the Server service handles RPC requests.

Recommendation. Microsoft recommends that customers apply the update immediately.

Known Issues. None
